St John the Baptist, Tunstall — Church Tower Parapet Repairs

Gransden Construction is appointed Principal Contractor to carry out tower repair works to the Grade II* parish church of St John the Baptist, Tunstall. The project focuses on parapet repairs and associated conservation to safeguard the tower and ensure its long-term performance for the congregation and community.

Scope of works

  • Specialist masonry conservation to the tower parapet using lime mortars and compatible repair techniques.
  • Careful protection of the clock and bells during the works.
  • Temporary works, scaffolding and site security designed to keep the church and public safe while worship and visits continue.

Our approach

We pair conservation craft with efficient delivery. A designed access scaffold and temporary weathering let us work safely at height while the church remains open. Our masons carry out like-for-like stone repairs—indents, pinning/stitching and re-bedding—then repoint with compatible lime mortars proven by on-site sample panels. We renew defective copings, correct falls for better water-shedding, and replace or dress lead flashings/chasings to stop ingress. Sensitive protection to the clock and bells, photographic QA and staged sign-offs ensure a durable, unobtrusive repair that preserves the tower’s character and performs for decades.

For architects & clients
We’re experienced in live church environments and listed fabric: early buildability input, mock-ups/samples for approval, and unobtrusive logistics that maintain safe access. If you’re planning tower, spire or façade conservation in Kent and the South East, we can help align scope, programme and budgets from the outset.
